Rocca di Frassinello
The first joint venture between an Italian and a French wine producer

This winery was created in 2007 by a joint-venture between Castellare di Castellina, owned by Paolo Panerai (a producer of Chianti Classico) and Domaines Barons d Rohschild, the most popular wine producer worldwide (i.e. Chateau Lafite).
Since Paolo Panerai had no opportunity to expand his business in the Chianti Classico area, he bought a land near Gavorrano and decided to put together the experience of Castellare with the Sangioveto grapes with the experience of the Rothschild with grapes such as cabernet, sauvignon, merlot and shirah.
To make sure that this new winery was well designed, the world-famous architect Renzo Piano was involved in its creation.
Piano has designed a winery essential in the lines, enhancing the functionality of a factory producing wine from grapes.  Usually wineries have a progressive and horizontal development to match the production order, from fermentation to packaging; Piano has revolutinized this concept by placing at the center of the building the barriquerie: a large room situated underground (to maintain naturally stable humidity ad temperture) with a huge roof without supporting columns; in the center of the roof, a big opening allows the sun to send a ray of light at the center of the room: the impression is to enter a church with a light in the center, surrounded by 2500 barrique in the darkness.
All around the barriquerie,  the distribution of all of the production cycle functions: on two sides, there are areas with teel vats, accessible from the roof above where the grapes are collected at the harvest.; then also packaging areas and warehouse.
To complete this French-Italian joint-venture in winemakig, two enologists were asked to supervise all activities: Christian Le Sommer, from Le Domaine, and Alessandro Cellai, from Castellare.
As for the wines produced at La Rocca we need to mention: the Vermentino, a series of red wines with a mix of sangioveto, merlot, cabernet sauvignon and shirah grapes ( the Poggio alla Guardia, the Ornell, the Le Sughere and the Rocca), and the famous Baffonero, entirely made from merlot grapes.
All these wines can be tasted as long as reservation is made, by calling 0566-88400 or sending an email to [email protected] The best way to reach Rocca di Frassinello is to take the exit of Giuncarico on the SS1 and follow the indications.
